Hystra identifies issue areas that a single player cannot tackle alone, bringing together consortiums of public, business and citizen sector players to research these issues. We start with a global scan of innovations in the field, we identify those that actually work (socially, economically, and environmentally) and analyze the obstacles that prevent them from reaching scale. We then propose a set of actions for the various types of organizations that can play a role in overcoming these obstacles (large corporations, NGOs, aid agencies, etc.), to catalyze change in the sector. These analyses and recommendations are presented in reports that are made available according to our open source philosophy.
What explains the success stories - and the failures - of inclusive businesses started or supported by large multinationals?
In this report, we draw key lessons from the corporate intrapreneurs whom we have supported over the past 10 years in building their inclusive businesses, in an effort to help the next wave succeed and scale faster.
Over the last decade, many multinational corporations have attempted to set up inclusive businesses - new business models with an embedded positive social impact - of one kind or another, with varying success. Despite good intentions and the investment of significant resources, few of these pilots have been successful and an even smaller proportion has reached significant scale.
Conversations which Hystra has had over the past 10 years with intrapreneurs leading these efforts at close to 20 multinational companies show that, across a variety of sectors and geographies, the challenges they have faced are very similar. This report draws lessons from this first wave of efforts, with a particular focus on the internal factors that affected the outcome and progress of these initiatives.

Access to Housing at the Base of the Pyramid (2011)
Based on a global research of 22 innovative Inclusive Business models providing Affordable Housing to the BoP, we - working in partnership with Ashoka - designed a toolbox to help our client executives design a BoP business model, starting with selecting a target segment to making design choices throughout the value chain, from financing though to access to land & services. This 68 pages step-by-step manual was then used by our client in building pilots in half a dozen developing countries. In 2011, we updated and complemented this research and presented it in Ashoka's Housing For All summit.
