Scaling Up Inclusive Healthcare in Low-and Middle-Income Countries

In a context where non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are on the rise, access to quality healthcare remains insufficient and largely inadequate for the 6.5 billion people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

This report - sponsored by the  Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationCFAO HealthcareEli Lilly and CompanyLeemProparco and Sanofi - looks at a new generation of inclusive healthcare initiatives that have emerged to address the rising chronic disease burden and improve the diagnosis, treatment, and care for underserved populations, with sustainable models. It is a sequel to the study "Assessing the landscape of innovative approaches", published in 2022, in which Hystra and the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science had identified a global landscape of 244 inclusive business initiatives.

Innovators are coming up with new technologies and business practices to address the well-known health systems challenges, including supply chain inefficiencies, low traceability of medicine, unaffordability of care, insufficient training of medical staff, inaccessibility at the last mile, lack of preventative behaviors, and others.

Based on a deep dive into the learnings shared by pioneering companies, this report presents business models innovations and recommendations - for entrepreneurs, corporates, investors, health funders, and governments - on how to unlock the growth potential of innovative inclusive businesses categorized into four business models: inclusive clinics and hospitals, pharmacy-based, community-based, and health coverage and disease prevention model.
