Supported Total in designing its Access to Energy Solutions strategy

In 2009, Hystra conducted a global scan of innovative business models in access to energy for Total, Schneider Electric, and Engie. After the publication of the findings, Total decided to follow Hystra’s recommendations and leverage their 4500-gas station network and brand trust to distribute solar products in Africa.

Total then selected Hystra to help develop the corresponding program “Total Access to Energy Solutions”, including firming up the sourcing strategy and conducting due diligence on potential suppliers, preparing the business plan, designing and launching the pilots in Kenya, Cameroon, and Myanmar, and supporting on corporate engagement throughout. Hystra then monitored pilot progress on a quarterly basis for three years, during which the program expanded to 10 countries and became a new business unit within Total.

Total Access to Energy Solutions has sold close to 4 million solar lanterns and kits in over 40 countries as of early 2021. GreenLight Planet and d.light, two of the manufacturers Total started working with in 2010 (thus securing their first large recurring orders), are now among the global leaders of certified solar products.
